So, yes, we did it! We took one more step in the American dream picture of the house and kids and dog – we got a dog!!
This was totally unscheduled and frankly uncalled for, but The Husband and I were looking at our finances last week and he suddenly said that it was about time we got a dog because the kids had been asking us for a long time now, and we should be able to bear the added expense but we would never get this time in their childhood back!
So, what does one say or do under such gruellingly emotional rhetoric?! I fully expected that we would take our time over this and mull over the type of dog we wanted, what we would name it, how we could keep it all by itself when we were out of the house etc etc. What I hadn’t realized was The Husband’s own secret desire to have a dog!
Before I knew it, I was being bombarded with emails with pictures of cute critters every day, and when I still didn’t take the bait, I got an urgent call on Friday evening to meet him and the kids at the local animal shelter because “he had to show me something!!” I t took us under an hour to approve, sign the papers and be handed the leash! My feeble attempts to explain to the shelter people that I didn’t even have any food for the varmint was pooh-poohed, and I was handed a bag full of dog food, two feeding bowls and even a pet bed!
Se, here we are, after a full weekend with doggie boy, who has been extremely endearing, amiable, and cautious to never let us out of his sight for fear of being abandoned once again! Our collective hearts have been melted, and he has us under his paw now! He’s slowly showing us his true personality by his playfulness, his marching up and down our street generously sprinkling his pee on every available bush and lampost to mark his territory, and his quietly slipping into our room and under our bed at night when we thought we had been very firm in showing him that his sleeping spot was in the landing!
The kids are, of course, ecstatic; Big A more than Little a, who tries not to show that he’s intimidated by Zeb’s size! Big A says he still can’t believe that after three years of his asking that we finally got him what he so dearly wanted! The Husband is delighted because he always wanted a dog, but he never got one because his parents were not on board with it. I am thrilled because I grew up with dogs and I’m getting back the warm, fuzzy feeling associated with having an endearing creature like this by my side!
As Big A said after coming back from a walk with Zeb, “When you have a dog, you’re never alone!”
